Spruce Pine Main Street fully utilizes the National Main Street's program of the Four Points: Organization, Promotion, Design, and Revitalization and has set up Committees to accomplish this. Since our Board is made up of Volunteers, we need additional Volunteers to help us get our goals accomplished.

ORGANIZATION

Executive Committee
Committee Chair: David Niven
The Executive Committee shall act for and on behalf of the Board of Directors when the Board is not in session, but shall be accountable to the Board for its actions.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • The Executive Committee will protect and ensure the integrity of the Main Street program and is delegated the powers and the authority of the full Board when the Board is not in session
  • Oversee and maintain the organization and operation of SPMS through Board and Membership development
  • Oversee Board development and training
  • Make recommendations to the full Board for authorization of non-budgetary expenditures
  • Assign and monitor the work and recommendations of committees
  • Make decisions when the full Board is not in meeting
  • Oversee all public relations and community related activities of SPMS
  • Recommend nominees to fill any vacancy on the Board of Directors
  • Review the performance, compensation, and terms of employment of the Executive Director
The Executive Committee handles routine board business. The full Board is responsible for approving decisions made by the Executive Committee. he Executive Committee meets when an emergency needs to be dealt with immediately and also delegates responsibilities to the Board's committees and monitors their work.

This committee maintains and protects the organization of the Main Street program. It encourages cooperation and working together and fosters the creation of collaborative partnerships from diverse groups and individuals. The committee supports these partnerships for a strong and effective economic and community revitalization program.

PROMOTION

Promotion-Events Committee
Committee Chair: Denise Clougherty
The Promotion-Events Committee shall sell a positive image of the commercial district through special events and quality event planning. Encourage consumers and investors to live, work, shop, play, eat and invest in the Main Street District.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Assist with planning and implementing planned special events including, but not limited to: Fire on the Mountain, Troutacular, Heritage Festival, and Christmas Week festivities
  • Assist other local groups with planned activities/events occurring in the Main Street district
  • Work toward building new sources of funding for the promotional/festival budget
  • Assist with building a strong network of volunteers to implement special events

Promotion-Public Relations Committee
Committee Chair: Michele Camp
It is the Promotion-Public Relations Committee's responsibility to make Downtown Spruce Pine a highly visible destination through traditional and modern marketing efforts. Sell a positive image of the commercial district through advertising, retail promotional activity, and marketing campaigns, and encourage consumers and investors to live, work, shop, play, eat and invest in the Main Street District.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Assist the Executive Director by helping him or her plan an annual promotion program
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to plan all publicity and promotion in support of SPMS
  • Work toward building new sources of funding for the promotional budget
Every Board Member has the responsibility to project a positive image of Spruce Pine Main Street in his or her public and private dealings. The role of the Promotions - Public Relations Committee is to help the Executive Director in his or her responsibility to set formal direction and provide opportunities for the rest of the Board to carry out this important duty.

DESIGN

Design & Beautification Committee
Committee Chair: Zan Sistare
To enhance the environment and quality of life for citizens, visitors and business in Spruce Pine through community projects like tree planting, cleanups, anti-liter and recycling education, creation and maintenance of green spaces, playground enhancements, neighborhood beautification and care and preservation of Spruce Pine's buildings and trees, encouraging visual quality of buildings, signs, window displays and public areas. The Committee's work shows a tangible commitment to revitalization.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Educate merchants, property owners, and the public in general about good design within the context of historic preservation and the National Main Street Center's 4-Point Approach in order that they might make informed choices about improvements or changes to properties within the District
  • Provide good design assistance to merchants and property owners within the District
  • Make recommendations for annual award recognitions
  • In conjunction with the Town of Spruce Pine and volunteers, maintain existing landscaping around the District
The primary role of the Design and Beautification Committee is to provide the expertise needed to advise business and property owners about planned improvements to properties within the District. To perform this role effectively, Committee members need to work as a team with the Executive Director, Town Staff, volunteers, and vendors.

REVITALIZATION

Economic Revitalization Committee
Committee Chair: Chris McCurry
To recruit and retain diversified, mixed use economic opportunities in the Downtown area that encourage and fulfill the live, work, play, grow atmosphere. The Main Street program helps sharpen the competitiveness of existing business owners and recruits compatible new businesses to respond to the needs of consumers. Offer workshops and seminars to help business owners improve management skills and customer service skills.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Assist the Executive Director by helping him or her identify and prioritize market opportunities
  • Support the financial structure of SPMS by assembling incentives and capital for both projects and operating
  • Identify ways to develop underutilized space within the District
  • Implement the economic components of the vision for Downtown Spruce Pine
Every Board Member has the responsibility to project a positive image of SPMS and market the potential in his or her public and private dealings. The role of the Economic Revitalization Committee is to help the Executive Director in his or her responsibility to set formal direction and provide opportunities for the rest of the Board to carry out this important duty.

This is a very exciting and changeable committee. Volunteer opportunities will be dependent on the needs of the current project. Since the needs may range from Environmental Engineering to Fund Raising to Distributing Information and anything in between, we'll have something interesting for you to do.
